Why M4A and MP3 are not interchangeable labels
M4A is an audio-only MP4 container, and the audio inside it is almost always AAC. MP3 is a different container with a different codec inside. Converting from one to the other means decoding the AAC samples and encoding them again as MP3, because the two formats store audio in different ways.
This matters because it explains the two things people usually ask about: why the file size changes, and why the conversion is not 'free' in quality terms even though it costs nothing in money terms.
What quality to actually expect
AAC to MP3 is a lossy-to-lossy conversion, which is the least favourable case. The first encode already discarded detail, and the second encode discards a little more. In practice a 192kbps or 256kbps MP3 export of a voice memo or a lecture recording is indistinguishable for listening purposes, while music with wide dynamics is where the loss becomes easier to hear.
The important consequence: choosing a higher bitrate than the source does not repair anything. If the recording arrived at 128kbps, exporting at 320kbps only avoids adding a little more damage and makes the file bigger.
Doing it in the browser
- 1. Add the M4A file to the audio converter. It also accepts MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, and the audio track inside MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM files.
- 2. Choose MP3 as the output format. For recordings, 192kbps is a reasonable default; use 256kbps or 320kbps when the material is music.
- 3. Run the task. Decoding and encoding both happen on your own machine, so the duration scales with recording length and your CPU rather than with your internet speed.
- 4. Compare a short segment before converting the whole archive. If the source is already lossy, that test tells you whether the extra step is worth doing at all.
